All offseason, the need for the New York Jets to get Justin Fields another proper weapon to go alongside Garrett Wilson was well-known.
Many thought that would happen in the first round of the NFL Draft, but tackle Armand Membou was selected, and New York got its weapon in the second round.
LSU tight end Mason Taylor heard his name called, and now he likely will shoot straight to the top of offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand's tight end depth chart.
While some are a little uncertain as to what to expect from Taylor, draft guru Todd McShay, in speaking on his podcast, thinks the Jets have gotten Fields a serious talent.
"Absolutely need it," McShay said . "And with that quarterback situation, you need security over the middle of the field and Mason Taylor's perfect for Justin Fields."
We don't like to use the word "perfect," but Taylor has the potential to be Fields' security blanket underneath, and with defenses likely pulling coverage to stifle Wilson, that could open up some holes Taylor could exploit.
Now, having a rookie come in and potentially be expected to shoulder a considerable offensive load isn't ideal, but given the Jets' other tight ends are Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt, having the second-rounder take the majority of snaps in preparation for a big rookie year is the smart play.
Fields will be looking to reignite his NFL career in the Big Apple, and yes, he has his former Ohio State running mate in Wilson, but having a reliable tight end he can go to in times of need is perhaps even more important.
And the hope is that Taylor will be that in Year 1.
