Jets end major competition after loser’s ‘dreadful day’

The New York Jets have just a few weeks remaining until they kick off their 2026 season with a game against the Tennessee Titans. The Jets have several roster competitions still ongoing during training camp, but one of those reportedly came to an end on Tuesday.

“STC Chris Banjo says Jason Sanders ‘has won the job’ at placekicker. Cade York has been waived. Banjo says he feels ‘really, really good about where Jason is.’ Cites his experience in the AFC East as a positive,” reported Rich Cimini of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

Cimini also pointed out that “York has a stronger leg than Sanders, but York had a dreadful practice yesterday. Sanders wasn’t all that great, either, yesterday.”

Sanders has spent the majority of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins and now will handle the reps, at least to start out, for the Jets. Meanwhile, York has bounced around the league since being selected in the fourth round of the draft a few years ago in a surprising move, and will now look to find a roster spot elsewhere as training camps around the NFL wind down.

Kicking is one of many areas where the Jets were not up to par last year, with the team ending up as the last winless squad in the NFL at one point before finally stringing together a couple of victories down the stretch of the season.

Some fans were surprised when head coach Aaron Glenn was brought back for another year despite the losing, but it’s safe to say that some marked improvement must be in order for him to be able to keep the job over the long haul.
