Jets finally bench Zach Wilson, but how long will it last?

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh had finally seen enough of quarterback Zach Wilson on Sunday.

After weeks of sub-par quarterback play and a stubborn refusal to make a change, Saleh finally lifted Wilson from the lineup during the Jets' ugly 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Wilson was replaced by veteran Tim Boyle. 

On one hand, the decision to replace Wilson with Boyle did prove what Saleh has been saying all along. The Jets' problems on offense go far beyond Wilson. Boyle completed just 7-of-14 passes for 33 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

That is shockingly worse than what Wilson did, as he completed 7-of-15 passes for 81 yards a touchdown and an interception. 

No matter who the quarterback was the line played poorly. There were turnovers, fumbles, dropped passes and there was never any threat of a big play. The Jets' best passing play of the day came on a fake punt in the second quarter when neither quarterback was on the field.

It's still understandable that the Jets felt they needed to make a change. The Wilson-led offense has been a non-factor following the injury to Aaron Rodgers. Worse yet, the offensive dysfunction has wasted one of the best defenses in the NFL. 

The question is where the Jets plan to go from here. Even if Rodgers is able to return this season (which still seems unlikely) he is still weeks away from taking the field. By then, the Jets would probably be out of the playoff race. 

Saleh would not commit to a starter for Friday's game against the Miami Dolphins, leading to speculation that it might be Boyle who gets the start. 

It is probably a no-win situation at this point. Wilson has proven over the past three years that he is not the answer or an upper-level NFL quarterback. But neither is Boyle for that matter, as he has barely looked like an NFL-caliber quarterback in his brief playing time. 

The Jets thought they were going to be Super Bowl contenders this season. Rodgers was supposed to lead an improved offense to complement an elite defense. His injury has ruined all of those plans.
