Jets finally pull the trigger on obvious move they should've made months ago
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets have traded quarterback Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

And it's a move that has been coming for a while now.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini added that this trade has been discussed for weeks, and there are people within the Broncos building that still believe in Wilson, saying he has "tons on talent and potential."

Wilson's time with the Jets has been very tumultuous and after everything that happened last season, trading him was the most likely scenario for New York this offseason.

However, after watching the Patriots trade quarterback Mac Jones in exchange for a sixth round pick, it made things clear how tough the market was for quarterbacks. And considering the struggles Wilson had, it's no surprise that teams were reluctant.

Along with Wilson, the Broncos are getting a seventh round pick (No. 256) while the Jets get a sixth round pick (No. 203). New York will still be responsible for some of Wilson's salary, The Athletic's Jeff Howe adds.

Wilson was drafted by the Jets in the first round with the second overall pick in 2021. However, it was clear that he struggled early on and things did not get any better. In his third season, New York brought in four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and Wilson was prepared to serve as a backup for the 2023 season.

Yet, 75 seconds into Rodgers' debut, he suffered a season-ending injury. And that meant Wilson was thrown right back into the starting role.

Throughout the season, Wilson went from starting quarterback to backup quarterback behind Tim Boyle, and then was even demoted to third-string quarterback when Trevor Siemian was promoted to backup over him.

Wilson joins Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci in the Broncos quarterback room after they traded Russell Wilson to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason.
