Jets GM addresses whether they'll pursue Ravens' Lamar Jackson

It sounds like New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas won't consider making a move for Baltimore Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson this spring. 

"First of all, Lamar Jackson’s a fantastic player," Douglas told reporters on Monday, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "But where we stand is, it would be disingenuous and negotiating in bad faith if we went down that path. So, right now, we have our plan, we have our process and we’re sticking to that." 

Back in February, NBC Sports' Peter King said that he thought the Jets could "put their sniffers out and seriously consider Lamar Jackson" if they didn't land Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers. Since then, however, Rodgers has made it known he intends to play for the Jets in 2023, and New York head coach Robert Saleh indicated on Monday he expects his club and the Packers will eventually work things out regarding a trade. 

"I’m not hitting the panic button," Saleh explained, per Brian Costello of the New York Post. "I’ve talked to you guys about it before. I worry about things I’ve got control over. That’s something I have zero control over, so I’m just going to focus my energy on the things that I do. It is what it is. I’m confident that things are going to work out. I’m a very positive person and optimistic so I’m confident that things will go the way we’re hoping, but at the same time it’s not going to eat at me." 

It's been mentioned that the Packers theoretically could wait until the summer to finalize a trade if they're not satisfied with the Jets' offer for Rodgers. Earlier this month, Packers president and chief executive officer Mark Murphy essentially confirmed that the organization is ready to move on from the future Hall of Famer and start 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love.

Jackson, meanwhile, is currently attached to the Ravens via the non-exclusive franchise tag and announced on Monday he requested a trade on March 2. He allegedly wants a fully guaranteed contract similar to the five-year deal worth $230M in guaranteed cash that Deshaun Watson received from the Cleveland Browns last year.

Jackson is free to speak with other clubs, and Baltimore can either match any offer he accepts or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. 

Some may believe that Jackson should be the Jets' first choice as it pertains to finding an upgrade at quarterback, largely because he's roughly 13 years younger than Rodgers (39). Instead, it seems the one-time NFL Most Valuable Player isn't even a plan B for Douglas and company ahead of the upcoming draft.
