Jets happy with Justin Fields' development, still feel he has 'a way to go'

Justin Fields did enough in his lone drive for the New York Jets on Saturday night.

The fifth-year quarterback went 3-of-4 passing for 42 yards and rushed two times for 14 yards and a touchdown in the Jets' 30-10 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Following the game, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn told the media he likes where Fields is at but stressed that the 2021 first-round pick has room for improvement before he plays his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in Week 1.

“I’ve told you guys this, and I’ll tell him this, he’s going to get criticized for every little thing, and the good thing about him is he is so mature, and we talk about this on a consistent basis — he doesn’t care,” Glenn said via NBC Sports. “The only thing that we care about is how is he operating and is he getting better, and we see that in house.

"We love where he’s at right now. Does he have a way to go? Absolutely he does. Is he going to continue to work? Absolutely he will, because that’s just who he is. We know exactly where he’s at, we know exactly where he’s going, and we’re going to continue to work our a-- off until we get there.”

Part of that room for improvement includes scoring touchdowns via the forward pass. Fields' greatest strength is his rushing ability, but he's no longer with the Chicago Bears or Steelers because he was never able to become consistent as a passer.

On Saturday, he scored a touchdown on the ground, but he'd be better off finding a receiver to connect with in the end zone.

Eventually, he's going to have to throw passing touchdowns if he wants to earn a long-term starting job in the league.
