As recently as Sunday, a report revealed that people within the New York Jets have "some level of interest" in possibly selecting Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson during the upcoming NFL Draft.
Earlier this offseason, the Jets brought journeyman Geno Smith back to the organization that drafted him in 2013 and that was his first NFL home through the 2016 season. While speaking with NFL Media's Judy Battista at the annual league meeting on Sunday, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was asked if Smith would be the team's starter.
"No doubt about it," Glenn responded, per Christian Gonzales of the NFL's website. "He's our guy."
Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky is possibly the only well-known analyst who has publicly named Simpson "the best quarterback" in this year's draft class. While most expect the Las Vegas Raiders have already decided to make Fernando Mendoza the first choice of the player-selection process, some believe Simpson will slide out of the draft's first round.
For a mock draft posted on Monday morning, ESPN's Matt Miller predicted that the Jets will grab Simpson with the first pick of the draft's second round.
"New York can take him here, allow him a year to develop behind Geno Smith, then evaluate his future," Miller wrote.
Glenn was also asked what having Smith atop the depth chart could mean for the 2026 Jets.
"It means to have a bona fide starter come in and lead this offense to where it needs to go," Glenn explained. "Listen, he's done it, you know, a couple of years. I mean, those years in Seattle, when he was, I think, Comeback Player of the Year. Man, he was up for MVP early in the season. There's no doubt in my mind that we brought a competent starter here on this team. I look forward to him getting in the building."
That's all well and good, but some believe the Jets are destined to endure another losing season later this year. If that turns out to be the case and the Jets have Simpson on their roster, he and not Smith could finish Week 18 as the club's starter.
