Jets head coach Adam Gase still committed to Sam Darnold as starting QB

The New York Jets fell to 0-11 on the season following Sunday's 20-3 loss to the Miami Dolphins and, in the process, inched even closer to earning the right to draft Clemson Tigers star quarterback Trevor Lawrence next spring.

Head coach Adam Gase and current Jets signal-caller Sam Darnold could both be with different organizations next fall, so it makes sense that Gase is sticking with the third-year pro in the lineup heading into next Sunday's showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders.

"Sam's the starter," Gase told reporters on Monday, per the Jets' official website. "We need Sam to play as many plays as possible and we will keep working every week. He's very competitive and wants to do well. He's looking forward to this next game [against visiting Las Vegas on Sunday].

"I think, obviously, any time you go through anything like this it can easily get to the point where it can affect you as a player, as a quarterback. He's done a good job talking through things on Monday when we wipe the slate clean and prepare for the next opponent. He's working to try to be a part of the solution. I don't see his attitude changing. I know it can't be easy for him. Any time you're a quarterback, you know that between the quarterback and the coach, everything's on you."

Darnold missed the previous two games and four of the past six due to the sprained AC joint he suffered in the loss to the Denver Broncos on Oct. 1, and the 23-year-old wasn't much of an offensive revelation in his return to the lineup. He completed 16-of-27 passes (59.3%) for 197 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions against Miami.

Former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player and veteran Joe Flacco will remain Darnold's backup for at least another week. Flacco completed 15-of-30 attempts for 205 yards with two touchdowns and a pick-six in the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 22.
