When the New York Jets signed quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal, some were skeptical of the commitment.
However, upon closer inspection, the Jets' deal provides them with an escape route after the 2025 season, should things go awry, and allows them to move on relatively unscathed financially.
So, it seems like a win-win.
If Fields plays well, the Jets have him for "only" $20 million in 2026, but if it doesn't work, the franchise can move on.
And for Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio outlined the bottom line for Fields when it comes to his time in New York.
"Justin Fields with the Jets, it's not a two-year commitment to him," Florio said. "It's a one-year commitment. Let's see what he can do. If he gets it done, he's back. If he doesn't, they'll go in a different direction."
In truth, nearly everyone knows that is the exact situation Fields faces in 2025.
After four years in the league, we have yet to see Justin consistently play at a high level to warrant him as a long-term starter.
But he'll get that chance under Aaron Glenn and Tanner Engstrand this season.
With a solid offensive line, a good run game led by Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, and a Garrett Wilson-led receiver room, Fields does have something to work with in the Big Apple.
But he's got to make it work.
While some are skeptical about whether he can, his future in the NFL as a starter may depend on whether he does.
If not, he might be on his fourth team in four years next offseason.
