Jets Kicking Themselves After Brutal Effort vs. Rams

One of many of the New York Jets' problems over the course of the season has been their kicking. And here we are again.

Coming into Sunday, the Jets had the second worst field-goal percentage in the NFL at just 72 percent. Their 92.6-percent extra-point number ranks seventh worst in the NFL.

The Jets' kicking woes continued during Sundays 19-9 loss against the Los Angeles Rams to bring them to 4-11 on the year. Typically, a team scoring nine points in a game comes from three field goals. For the Jets, it came on one touchdown, a missed PAT, and one of two field goals made.

The missed field goal came late in the game, with the Jets trailing by 10 on fourth-and-nine after a false start penalty pushed them back five yards. The Jets had all three timeouts and the two minute warning, when Anders Carlson lined up for a 49 yard field goal to make it a one score game. Carlson's kick went very wide right, ending the Jets' hopes of a Sunday victory.

Carlson also missed the PAT after the Jets' touchdown on their 99 yard opening drive. It was his second missed PAT on the season in five games for the Jets.

Carlson is the fourth kicker the Jets have deployed this season. Greg Zuerlein, who spent the past two seasons as a knockdown kicker for the Jets, started the season knocking down only 60 percent of his field goals and missing one of his 14 PATs before being placed on the IR. Riley Patterson and Spencer Schrader were also given cups of coffee, with Patterson drilling all three of his extra points, not being given a field goal chance, and Schrader made both of his field goal attempts while not getting a PAT chance.

Whether it be due to a lack of confidence in Carlson, or interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich opting for a more aggressive approach with no playoff implications for the Jets, the team opted to keep the offense out on the field for five of their seven fourth downs. The team converted on two of their fourth down tries.

The Jets will kick off again after Christmas on the road, taking on the Bills on December 29. They will finish out their year back at MetLife Stadium, taking on the Dolphins. ... and will keep kicking themselves over losses like this.
