The New York Jets needed a weapon for Justin Fields in the early rounds of the draft, and after tackle Armand Membou was taken in round one, LSU tight end Mason Taylor heard his name called at the beginning of the second round.
A solid contributor in his three seasons with LSU, totaling 1,308 yards and six touchdowns, Taylor comes to New York and will become Fields' TE1 from the get-go.
But while his stats don't jump off the page, there is an ascending talent here, folks, and it is only when you hear him speak that you get the sense that something special is coming to the Jets offense.
With the type of culture and environment that new head coach Aaron Glenn is trying to build, we get the sense that Mason will fit in rather well.
But what can fans expect from him?
“Just a guy that comes every single day, consistent, hard worker, doing everything the right way,” Taylor said. “Doing what he's told to do, making plays on and off the field, being a great locker room guy. On the field, being that guy in the clutch moments to step up on third downs, when it's a must-get touchdown, being that guy that can be counted on, be that safety blanket for a quarterback.
"Be that guy that's reliable in the pass game, but also in the run game, complete every down tight end that I pride myself on is something I really look forward to showing Jets fans.”
In short, Mason's going to do it all.
And that will get Jets fans amped up for what the 2025 season could look like with Taylor, Fields, and Garrett Wilson as the three-headed monster for Tanner Engstrand.
Coming from Hall of Fame bloodlines with his father, Jason Taylor, making his name as a linebacker with the Miami Dolphins, Mason now gets his turn in the sun and is determined to be Glenn's ultimate soldier.
And it is that mindset and willingness to be a team player, to do the dirty work, and to be the guy everyone in the building can count on that could see Mason develop into a fan favourite rather quickly.
