Jets Name Cade Klubnik Backup QB

Geno Smith remains in place as New York’s starter for 2026, with Cade Klubnik the only other passer currently on the active roster. More moves at the QB position will be coming, but head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed today (video link) Klubnik has earned the No. 2 position.

Throughout the offseason, the Clemson product has drawn rave reviews. Klubnik was in a competition for the QB2 gig with Zappe heading into training camp. Given the decision to move on from not only Zappe (at least, for the time being) along with Cook yesterday, though, Klubnik was in line for the backup gig. Glenn’s news conference has since confirmed it.

Selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft – one not held in particularly high regard at the quarterback position – Klubnik was seen upon arrival as a developmental passer for the future. In the event of missed time on Smith’s part, though, he will be counted on to take control of the offense. Steps forward on that side of the ball are being sought by the Jets in 2026, the first season in which Glenn will have Frank Reich handling offensive coordinator duties.

Smith was acquired via trade to offer the Jets a stopgap signal-caller. He is a pending free agent, leading many to expect a one-and-done showing upon his return to New York. That would set up the Jets for a high QB investment in the 2027 draft as part of the team’s bid to find a long-term franchise passer. Regardless of how that effort plays out, Klubnik is positioned to handle an important role right away.

Smith has been durable through the past four seasons, serving as the starting quarterback of the Seahawks and Raiders over that span. It would come as no surprise if he were to deliver another full campaign in 2026. Nevertheless, the possibility of Klubnik seeing game time as a rookie could emerge as a storyline to follow.
