The New York Jets have been linked to one of the top cornerbacks available in the 2026 NFL free agent class, with projections naming them as the best team fit for Riq Woolen. Woolen’s combination of size, speed and playmaking ability has made him one of the most sought-after defenders on the open market.

Woolen, who is coming off a Super Bowl championship and a season that showcased his range and athleticism, enters free agency with elevated status. Teams around the league have taken note of his ability to challenge receivers vertically and contribute in multiple defensive schemes, making him a valuable addition in both man and zone concepts.

For the Jets, bolstering the secondary has been a priority as they seek to complement a defense that showed flashes of promise but also room for improvement. Adding a cornerback of Woolen’s caliber would address a need for consistency in coverage against elite receivers in the AFC and across the league.

New York’s coaching staff has experience developing perimeter defenders, and the franchise’s history of aggressive defensive play could provide an appealing environment for Woolen. The fit is seen by some evaluators as particularly strong because the Jets have the schematic flexibility to get their top cover man into favorable matchups.

Woolen may get to contribute more in New York if the Jets sign him for next season. This is detailed more in an analysis by Matt Bowen for ESPN.

The Jets allowed 57 completions of 20 or more yards in 2025, seventh most in the league. Adding Woolen, a 6-foot-5 corner with high-end physical tools and speed, fits under coach Aaron Glenn’s defense. This unit wants to play man coverage, and Woolen has 12 interceptions and 36 pass breakups in his four-year career in Seattle. I also like the Commanders as a fit.

From a financial perspective, the Jets have the cap space and the roster structure to pursue high-end talent in free agency without compromising other key areas. Landing a player like Woolen could have a ripple effect, allowing the team to rotate talent and maintain depth throughout the secondary.

As free agency unfolds, the Jets will be among the clubs monitored closely should Woolen decide where to take his next deal. Should the pairing come to fruition, it would signal New York’s intent to build a championship-caliber defense around its emerging core.
