Jets' New Special Teams Ace Carted Off Practice Field at Training Camp
Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets fans had what turned out to be a minor scare when new quarterback Justin Fields left practice with a toe injury. Now, another newcomer has gotten hurt at training camp on Saturday, and this one sounds more serious.

According to sources, special teams ace Kris Boyd, who signed with the Jets in free agency, was "writhing in pain" after a special teams drill.

He was carted off the field after going down on the sidelines with what looked like an injury to his left shoulder. A beat writer at practice described Boyd as being in "visible pain" as he was exiting.

Head coach Aaron Glenn informed reporters that the roster suffered multiple injuries Saturday, in addition to Boyd.

“When it comes to the injuries today, X [Xavier Gipson] has a shoulder. Boyd has a shoulder. Jaylin Simpson has a hamstring. I will know more as I go in and those guys get checked out,” Glenn said.

Boyd, 28, signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with New York this offseason.

He was a seventh-round defensive back drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Jets are Boyd's fourth team after spending time with the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.

Last year in Houston, Boyd played all 17 games for just the second time in his six-year career. He appeared in just four percent of the Texans' defensive snaps, but was active for over 77 percent of the team's special teams snaps - the second-highest amount of action in his career.
