Jets' Offense Predicted To Have Distinct Running Flavor

The way forward for the New York Jets, at least this year under Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, seems to be rather straightforward.

With a running quarterback in Justin Fields, coupled with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen behind a stout and perhaps underrated offensive line, the Jets will be running the ball and a lot.

Well, that's the plan anyway.

With Engstrand coming from the Detroit Lions, who have boasted a stellar run game the past couple of seasons, The Athletic's Jacob Robinson thinks that the Jets will try to replicate that.

"It’s no secret that the Jets offense plans to run the ball a lot, but we still don’t know how this talented backfield will split," Robinson writes. "RB Breece Hall is ready for a three-down role, but with OC Tanner Engstrand hailing from Detroit, The Athletic’s Jets beat reporter Zack Rosenblatt suspects that Hall plays the Jahmyr Gibbs role, with Braelon Allen as the David Montgomery-type. Expect their quarterback to run plenty, too."

Hall has shown he can be a dependable back, both as a runner and pass catcher, while Allen, albeit fleetingly in his rookie season, showed flashes of his bruising potential.

Now, the pair are behind a good offensive line and have Engstrand and Glenn, both of whom have ideas on how the Lions ran their offense, so there will no doubt be some familiarity there.

The question is, can Fields bring it all together? We know his ability as a runner, but if there isn't the threat of him passing downfield, defenses will stack the box and stop the run.

So, while the offense will be run-heavy, Fields has to show he can be a consistent passer to keep defenders from crashing down and stuffing run after run.

The plan of attack seems simple under Engstrand. Let's see if the players can carry out his vision.
