Jets QB Aaron Rodgers breaks silence on Davante Adams trade

The New York Jets have had an eventful last couple of weeks. First they fired head coach Robert Saleh, then dropped a close game to the Bills on Monday Night Football. New York responded to Monday’s loss by making a big trade, acquiring wide receiver Davante Adams from the Raiders. It should be no surprise that his new QB has plenty of good things to say about him.

Aaron Rodgers gushed about how excited he is to play with Davante Adams again on The Pat McAfee Show.

“I love Davante Adams and he’s a phenomenal player and a dear friend,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers went on to explain exactly how long after Monday Night Football he had to wait before learning about the trade.

“It was a crappy day yesterday, obviously we had a real good chance to get to 3-3 and win a home game. I kind of gave that one away. I was pissed driving home, the traffic. Had a couple messages [but] I was just not in the mood to talk to anybody. Got home and Davante had called me and texted me so I finally called him back. So about 12:30 or 12:45 last night I heard the news.”

Rodgers and Adams are excited to play with each other once again. It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to get back up to speed.

How does trading for Davante Adams impact the Jets offense moving forward?

This begs the question: how much will adding Davante Adams change the Jets offense?

Adams has the potential to become a force multiplier for the Jets. Adding Davante Adams pushes all other wide receivers one spot further down the depth chart. That means Garrett Wilson is now WR2, Allen Lazard WR3, with Xavier Gipson and Malachi Corley as reserve options.

This may not sound like a lot, but it does make the Jets significantly more dangerous on offense. Opposing defenses only have so many ways to slow down offenses, which means that adding another threat should open someone else up on a play-to-play basis.

There’s also the mind meld between Rodgers and Adams that is a unique X-factor.

Finally, one other side effect of this trade is that Mike Williams could possibly be traded. The Jets have reportedly put Williams on the trade block, per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. There simply isn’t enough space on the depth chart for him to regularly see the field.

It remains to be seen when Adams will play his first game with the Jets. It may be as soon as this week, but fans should expect Adams to use a week to get healthy and learn the offense.

Regardless, keep an eye on the injury report and game designations this week to learn more.
