Justin Fields and the New York Jets are 2-8, with wins coming against the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. They're looking to get their third win of the season, playing Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12.
However, Fields won't be manning the offense after head coach Aaron Glenn announced Tyrod Taylor will be the starting quarterback against the Ravens. After signing a two-year, $40 million contract this past offseason, Fields already finds himself on the bench.
In nine games this season, he has completed 128 of 204 passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, one interception and a 89.5 passer rating. The 26-year-old has also rushed for 383 yards and four touchdowns on 71 attempts.
On Friday, while talking to the media, Fields shared his reaction to being benched and placed behind Taylor.
“There’s no reaction," he said, according to Connor Hughes of SNY. "That’s life. [Expletive] happens.”
It's not as though Fields' benching came out of nowhere, as he has struggled all season. One of his worst performances came in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, when he threw for just 27 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter with a concussion. In four separate games, he has failed to throw for at least 100 yards.
Taylor is looking to provide a spark against the Ravens, but he hasn't looked much better in his limited opportunities. In three games, he has completed 43 of 69 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and a 73.3 passer rating.
Fields' blunt response to being benched shows some clear frustration, but it doesn't mean he can't once again be called upon if Taylor struggles.
Kickoff between the Jets and Ravens (5-5) is Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at M&T Bank Stadium, airing on CBS.
