Jets QB Justin Fields Offers Awkward Promise Amid NFL Draft Rumors

When you sign a contract that guarantees you $40 million over two years, there is reason to be somewhat comfortable in your standing at your job. ... even though that's a low-end number in today's game.

Perhaps that is why Justin Fields would have no objection to serving as a mentor to a rookie quarterback, regardless what round they are drafted in later this month.

Despite him serving as the short-term answer at quarterback with the Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Fields is happy with his contract and comfortable he is the man in the Big Apple.

He does not view an incoming rookie as a threat to his job. He knows his worth to the Jets and refuses to speculate on what might happen should the Jets draft a big-name backup.

Fields addressed the matter on Wednesday at a press conference at the Jets facility.

"I don't really like to answer rhetorical questions," Fields said, adding a promise. "I'm willing to teach, but I'm really not interested in rhetorical questions."

Fields, at age 26, a mentor for a QB taken in this draft? That sounds ... awkward.

Whether the Jets take a quarterback early, as is rumored, will show how invested they are in Fields. If they take a quarterback early, it might be two years and done for Fields. If they take one late, or don't take one at all, they might be committed for Fields for the longer haul.

After what he went through in his two previous stops, he would probably be happier if the Jets did not spend a high-round pick on a quarterback. He is not going to want to be looking over his shoulder every week, regardless how much money he is making.
