Jets' Quinnen Williams wakes up to a bunch of well earned accolades

After the media, in particular ESPN, spent Monday of this week insulting Jets running back Breece Hall by leaving him out of the top 10 running backs in the NFL, the made up to the Jets by praising defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

In their second installment of ranking the top 10 players at every position, ESPN put out a list of the top defensive tackles in the NFL going into this season. While Quinnen did drop from the second spot he was in last year to fifth this year, he was still on the list (unlike Breece who was left off).

Williams has been one of the constants amid persistent Jets changes. He's going on three straight Pro Bowls and has 23.5 sacks during that span, though 12 of them came in 2022.

Williams is solid yet unspectacular in most categories, including pass rush win rate (13.4%), incompletions credited (16) and quarterback hits (18).

One complaint from an AFC exec is that Williams "gets pushed around in the run game" at times, but that's nitpicking an elite player. One AFC scout said Williams didn't have much help around him inside, prompting defenses to key on him. He also battled through a hamstring issue.

"He's a guy you have to dedicate a game plan to," an NFL coordinator said. "One of the most complete interior guys in the game."

That wasn’t the only outlet that listed Quinnen on their top player list this week. The NFL and the NFL Network are currently in the process of counting down their top 100 players and Quinnen came in at number 87. Not too bad for a guy on a bad team and having a down year.

This accolade comes just a week after CBS left Quinnen off of their list of the top 100 players. Despite not jumping off the page with his statistics last season, Quinnen was still a dominant force on the defensive line, often eating double teams just to watch his teammates fail to make a play behind him. Quinnen is truly one of the top defensive tackles in the game, whether he racks up the stats or not.

The Jets are going to be different on defense this year than they have in the past with a new direction and new philosophy. I imagine Quinnen will still be the focal point of the defensive front. I still believe the Jets should work to get him some help on the interior of the defensive line, but I think that ship might have sailed for new GM Darren Mougey
