Jets' Robert Saleh responds to Joe Namath, Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh spoke with reporters Wednesday after both Hall of Famer Joe Namath and Week 1 starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers generated headlines with comments offered amid the club's two-game losing streak.

"I haven’t spoken to Joe, but obviously Joe is an icon, a Hall of Famer and a well-respected individual in this organization," Saleh said, per Alex Smith of SNY. "Door’s always open for him to walk in and my office is always open for him, but we’ll agree to disagree with his comments. But he is entitled to those comments." 

Namath appeared on the ESPN New York "The Michael Kay Show" on Monday and directly said he's "seen enough of" struggling quarterback Zach Wilson, who may be the league's worst overall player at the position three weeks into the season. Per ESPN stats, Wilson enters Week 4 ranked 33rd out of 34 qualified players with a 26.7 adjusted QBR, and the 24-year-old is dead last in the NFL with a 52.4% completion percentage and a 57.0 passer rating. 

During Tuesday's appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Rodgers called for "our fanbase, our former players and our current players" to "stay behind our guys." As noted by Ryan Chichester of Audacy, Rodgers also said the Jets "need to grow up a little bit on offense" after wide receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Michael Carter were spotted having animated conversations on the sideline during this past Sunday's 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots. 

"He's seen it all," Saleh said about Rodgers on Wednesday, according to Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today. "For him to recognize that and talk through it, he's not wrong. When you have frustration, it's easy to look for answers when sometimes the most important answers are inward. That's the only way you can defeat adversity. He's not wrong but at the same time, it's just a bunch of young guys just showing a little frustration. They'll be all right." 

With Rodgers out until next year due to the torn Achilles he suffered in Week 1, Saleh will again give Zach Wilson the nod when the 1-2 Jets host the 2-1 Kansas City Chiefs this coming Sunday night. Saleh eventually could turn to either unproven backup Tim Boyle or journeyman Trevor Siemian as soon as Monday unless the Jets make a move for a proven starter such as Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans.
