The New York Jets will have Justin Fields back under center on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed Saturday that Fields cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol after practicing fully for three consecutive days.

“Justin is playing,” Glenn said. “He’s a dynamic runner. He’s a smart player. I think in the passing game he showed exactly what he can do in that first game and we want to continue to expand on that and continue to get better.”

Fields suffered the first concussion of his career in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills when his head hit the turf on a fourth-quarter sack by Joey Bosa. He later described symptoms that included “migraines throughout the day, sensitivity to light… I couldn’t really focus.” The injury sidelined him for the Week 3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What Justin Fields’ Return Means for NY

In Fields’ absence, veteran Tyrod Taylor kept the Jets competitive, throwing for 197 yards and two touchdowns in the 29-27 defeat. Still, the offense sputtered early, and New York enters Week 4 at 0-3. With Fields back, the playbook opens up again: designed quarterback runs, layered play-action, and the ability to extend plays outside of structure.

The Jets hope that will also spark a rushing attack that has stalled. Breece Hall managed only 50 yards on 19 carries over the last two games. Glenn was blunt earlier in the week: “We have to run the ball better… I have an expectation of this team on how we operate, and I’m not going to stand down from that.”

Justin Fields’ Season So Far

Fields impressed in the opener, completing 16 of 22 passes for 218 yards while rushing for two touchdowns in a narrow 34-32 loss to the Steelers. Week 2 was another story, as he went just 3-for-11 for 27 yards before exiting with the head injury. His return tonight is critical as the Jets try to avoid their first 0-4 start since 2020.

Signed to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency, Fields is effectively on a one-year audition to prove he can be the Jets’ long-term answer. Monday night’s divisional matchup under the lights provides another chance to show he can be that player.
