Jets Sign Jamaal Pritchett to Practice Squad
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Jets signed Jamaal Pritchett to the practice squad on October 13 and released veteran receiver Tyler Johnson. It brings Pritchett back just three days after he was waived when Tim Patrick returned to the active roster. The move does not put Pritchett on the 53-man roster, but it keeps a young receiver the team knows in the building. The Jets confirmed both moves in their roster announcement.

Pritchett got a brief taste of regular-season action earlier this year after the Jets signed him to the active roster in Week 3. He made his NFL debut against Detroit, playing three special teams snaps and returning a kickoff 27 yards. That is not much of a sample, but it showed one way he can contribute while he continues to develop as a receiver. He also spent last season on the Jets practice squad after joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2025.

The Jets have had plenty of movement at wide receiver, and Pritchett has already experienced both sides of it this season. A spot on the active roster gave him his first NFL game; the arrival of Patrick cost him that spot. Now he has another opportunity to practice with the team and work toward the next call-up. For a young player, staying close to the action matters, even if there is no immediate promise of Sunday snaps.

Johnson’s departure removes a more experienced option from the practice squad. He signed there on September 15 after spending the summer with Dallas, and Jets fans saw him in a larger role last season. Johnson appeared in 12 games, catching 12 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown. That score came in the 39-38 win over Cincinnati, one of the more memorable moments of his time with the team.

This is a practice squad exchange rather than a shake-up of the active Jets Roster. The Jets are trading Johnson’s veteran experience for another look at Pritchett, whose kick-return ability could help his case if an opportunity opens. Whether he gets another game-day chance remains to be seen, but after being waived Saturday, he is back where he can keep competing for one.
