The New York Jets announced yesterday that they have signed wide receiver and return specialist Junior Bergen while waiving/injured wide receiver DT Sheffield.
Bergen, 5-foot-9 and 184 pounds, was a seventh-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2025 NFL Draft. He spent his rookie season on the 49ers’ practice squad before signing a reserve/futures contract with San Francisco in January. The 49ers waived him last week.
Bergen’s biggest strength could be on special teams. During four seasons at Montana, he tied the FCS career record with eight punt return touchdowns and set a Montana record by averaging 16.71 yards per punt return. He also contributed on offense, finishing his college career with 145 receptions for 1,777 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The move gives the Jets another option at wide receiver and in the return game as they work through the final stretch of training camp and preseason.
To make room for Bergen, the Jets waived/injured Sheffield. The Rutgers product originally joined the Jets in May as an undrafted free agent.
