Jets strike twice on massive special-teams plays against Browns

Not much has gone right for the New York Jets this season. First year head coach Aaron Glenn led his team into Sunday with a 1-7 record and looking for a spark somewhere.

Glenn found that during the Jets' game against the Cleveland Browns in the form of his special teams unit. New York returned both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns, all within a span of five plays.

New York Jets score on two special-teams plays

With 6:21 remaining in the first quarter, Jets RB Kene Nwangwu, a 2021 Minnesota Vikings fourth-round pick from Iowa State, returned the kickoff 99 yards, with the extra point tying the game at 7-7. Sunday was just the fourth time this season that Nwangwu has been active for a game.

After a three-and-out forced by the Jets defense, it was time for WR Isaiah Williams to get in on the return-game fun. He took the punt back 74 yards for the second special teams touchdown in as many possessions for New York, giving the Jets a two-touchdown lead.

Williams, a second-year player out of Illinois, was averaging 10.2 yards per return on 11 attempts before Sunday's long touchdown return.

Why a lost season still matters

Despite limited success this season, the New York players are still competing for playing time and trying to help build a culture for the future.

Especially for players like Nwangwu and Williams, who haven't played much this season, those return plays are the type that can help keep them on the field in what has been a bit of a lost season.
