After years of being a leaguewide laughingstock, the New York Jets hope to begin a new era. The team fired head coach Adam Gase, replacing him with former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. With this change of regime, the Jets want to land a few big names in free agency, especially at receiver. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that the team has JuJu Smith-Schuster and Will Fuller at the top of its free-agent wish list.
Whether the team decides to give Sam Darnold another shot or take a rookie quarterback with the second overall pick, adding Smith-Schuster and Fuller would be welcome additions for the Jets. They currently have one of the weakest receiving corps in the entire league, led by Jamison Crowder, Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims.
Fuller was having a career year with the Texans before he was hit with a six-game suspension for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. Despite the suspension, Fuller is still expected to generate serious interest on the free-agent market. As for Smith-Schuster, he is coming off a relatively disappointing season in Pittsburgh, but the young receiver still has plenty of time to get his career back on track.
If the Jets are able to get into the running for some big-name free agents, they should have no problem affording them. The team is currently projected to have $75 million of cap space this offseason, the second-most in the league, behind only the Jacksonville Jaguars.
