Jets To Waive QB Bailey Zappe

Zappe was competing for a depth spot in New York’s QB room. Ahead of training camp, the No. 2 gig was seen as a distinct possibility. Based on how camp and the preseason have played out, though, Zappe is not in the team’s plans (barring a practice squad deal in the coming days).

The Jets have trade acquisition Geno Smith on track to handle starting duties for 2026, with a high draft investment next spring being widely expected. Former undrafted free agent Brady Cook along with fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik are still in the fold. Cimini names Cook as another cut/practice squad candidate.

Klubnik was one of several signal-callers seen as a developmental option in the aftermath of this year’s draft. The Clemson product has drawn praise through spring practices and training camp, however. Today’s news further illustrates the extent to which Klubik’s stock has risen ahead of his debut NFL season.

Zappe, 27, was in line to collect $1.08MM from the Jets. He did not receive any guaranteed money from New York, however, so the team will save that figure in cap space without taking on a dead money charge. Zappe will be available on the waiver wire until Monday afternoon. He will become a free agent if no claims are made.

Attention will now turn to the question of whether or not the Jets will keep Cook in place through tomorrow’s cutdown deadline. If he is waived as well, New York’s moves with respect to practice squad passers will be worth watching closely.
