Jets trade for Davante Adams paves way for Chiefs to make their own blockbuster deal with New York

Now that the New York Jets have officially acquired wide receiver Davante Adams, the Kansas City Chiefs could spring into action with a move of their own.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported a couple of weeks ago that the Chiefs could be interested in trading for a Jets receiver should New York land Adams. Kansas City has a huge need for an impact pass catcher after losing Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice for the season.

If the Chiefs were to trade for a Jets receiver, veteran Mike Williams would be the only real option. K.C. is familiar with Williams as he spent seven years with their divisional rival Los Angeles Chargers. Williams has 319 career receptions for 4,951 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Williams has been a big play machine throughout his career with his incredible blend of size and speed. Unfortunately, he has battled through numerous injuries, playing only two full seasons. He missed 18 games during his final two years with the Chargers, ultimately leading to his release.

Coming of a torn ACL, Williams has been trying to work his way back into form during the first six weeks of the season as a Jet. He has 10 catches for 145 yards so far. At times he has flashed his old self, but there have also been several instances where he's looked like a 30-year-old receiver with an extensive injury history.

Perhaps the Chiefs think there's still some tread left on the tires with Williams. Just this season we've seen receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back Kareem Hunt revive their careers in K.C. after many had written them off. If Williams can stay healthy and the Chiefs can get the most out of him, he would a valuable addition.

The Jets aren't going to deal third-year stud receiver Garrett Wilson as they'll want to pair him with Adams and take their offense to the next level. They're very likely not going to trade Allen Lazard either since he has tremendous chemistry with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

New York may be willing to exchange second-year receiver Xavier Gipson for a late-round pick, but he would mostly be a special teams contributor and a bottom-end receiver - unless the Chiefs feel that there's some untapped potential there. Gipson's speed would fit nicely in K.C.'s offense and he could work out of the slot a bit.
