Jets Trade Killed By Woody Johnson's Teenagers Playing Madden?

NEW YORK - The past two offseasons for the Jets were designed to set the team up to become immediate title contenders. Acquiring big names such as Aaron Rodgers, Mike Williams, and Haason Reddick were supposed to end the Jets 13-year playoff drought.

Through 14 games, however, the Jets playoff drought has now expanded to 14 years.

Jets owner Woody Johnson has continually made big promises to Jets fans, but failed to deliver results. He has built a rumor-laded reputation among those involved with the team to be a meddling, ill-advised presence in the building.  ...

And The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver are reporting on just another hilariously frustrating instance that occurred during this past offseason.

Per The Athletic report, the Jets and Broncos were close to a deal for former first-round pick Jerry Jeudy. Jeudy was coming off of a bit of a down year, with 758 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The year prior, Jeudy had 972 receiving yards, finding the end zone six times. By most measures, he is clearly talented receiver who could've been another playmaker for a Jets offense that has sorely lacked them over the last few years.

Right as the deal was nearing the finish line, Woody Johnson stepped in and put a stop to the deal, to the confusion of Broncos general manager George Paton. Johnson's reputed reasoning?

Jeudy's rating in the Madden NFL video game was too low. Jerry Jeudy's overall rating in Madden 24? An 83, the third highest on the Broncos (and, would've been the third highest on the Jets' offense, behind Rodgers (86) and Garrett Wilson (84)).

Jeudy would be traded to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth and sixth-round pick. Jeudy currently has a career high with 1,052 yards to go along with four touchdowns. Interestingly, in Madden 25, Jeudy still sits at an 83 overall.

This isn't the first time Madden ratings have come up in Jets meetings as well, as Johnson reportedly had pause about signing guard John Simpson due to his low "awareness" rating in the game. Talk about irony.

Apparently, the Madden influence comes from Johnson's two teenage sons, "Brick" and Jack. The two Johnson boys have also begun making appearances in team meetings, to the displeasure of Jets decision-makers. Prior to the season, now-fired general manager Joe Douglas was quoted as saying "I answer to a teenager".

If the Jets are genuinely using the opinions of teenagers based off of Madden ratings, the New York playoff drought and dysfunction seems to be here to stay.
