Key Points:
The New York Jets aren't the type of team that can afford to make special teams mistakes. However, that's exactly what they've done so far, and it's part of the reason they're 0-4.
For example, former Jets wide receiver/kick returner Xavier Gipson lost a fumble on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter of their Week 1 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. New York was up 26-24 at the time, but Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass two plays later, putting his team up 31-26. Pittsburgh ultimately won 34-32.
The Jets cut Gipson after the game, but that didn't stop their fumbling woes. They went into halftime against the Miami Dolphins down 10-3 on "Monday Night Football" in Week 4, but wide receiver/kick returner Isaiah Williams lost a fumble on the kickoff to open the second half. That led to a Dolphins touchdown, putting them up 17-3. New York lost 27-21.
However, the Jets are staying consistent with their accountability, via ESPN's Rich Cimini.
"Source: The Jets are releasing WR/KR Isaiah Williams, who fumbled and made an ill-advised fair catch on MNF," he reported. "They’re signing LB Mykal Walker from the PS. Elevated from PS: S Dean Clark and Avery Williams."
Cimini also pointed out the emerging pattern.
"This is the second time that a special teams mistake has resulted in a player losing his job (Xavier Gipson, Week 1)," he added. "Aaron Glenn isn’t messing around."

The Jets head coach kept it simple after the Week 1 loss, via The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt.
“You will not be on the field if you cause us to lose games,” Glenn said.
The Jets released Gipson shortly after and followed suit with Williams on Saturday. This shows that Glenn's statement wasn't just lip service, and the new regime will hold its players accountable instead of making excuses.
It's been a slow start for Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey in their first season with the team, but the squad has been competitive in three of its four losses. It lost 30-10 to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2, but it then fell 29-27 in a down-to-the-wire Week 3 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Up next is a home date with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The game will be at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
