Jim Harbaugh evaluates Justin Herbert's performance in Chargers loss to Texans

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had arguably the worst game of his NFL career in a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday in an AFC wild-card matchup. Herbert was 14-of-32 for 242 yards with one passing touchdown and four interceptions.

As bad as Herbert's stat line was, there may be more nuance to it than one may think. The Chargers offensive line did not protect Herbert at an adequate level. Houston's defense pressured Herbert relentlessly, often sending a blitz, and the Chargers O-line didn't have an answer.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Herbert was pressured on 19 of 36 dropbacks (52.8%) and was 3-of-15 when pressured for 103 yards with two interceptions and four sacks. Herbert was under pressure in less than 2.5 seconds 11 times (five times unblocked).

While Herbert said he let the team down and the loss was on him, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh didn't think the team put him in a position to succeed.

"He's got to be able to finish a throwing motion," Harbaugh said, via Kris Rhim of ESPN. "Quarterback's got to be able to do that, and we didn't put him in the position to do that enough."

Herbert's four-interception showing was surprising, to say the least, as he was careful with the football all season long. Herbert threw just three interceptions during the regular season in 504 pass attempts. Now the Chargers will have to come up with a plan this offseason to better protect Herbert, which will likely mean some changes in personnel along the offensive line. Herbert was clearly not on top of his game, but the final outcome may have been a lot different if the O-line gave him any help.
