The perception around the NFL and among fans has been that the Los Angeles Chargers have fell short of meeting expectations this offseason.
They entered free agency with boatloads of cap space, and they were expected to dish it out to all sorts of players to help speed up the retooling process.
Instead, the team shifted their attention to depth signings and seeking out hidden gems instead of shelling out hundred-million-dollar contracts like their competitors.
Wide receiver is one of the main positions that Los Angeles needed to address this offseason, and it seems like they’ve settled on former fan favorite Mike Williams as the solution to their problems.
The former New York Jet’s reputation is at an all-time low after a miserable season with the New York Jets and a trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The former first-round receiver couldn’t even accumulate 300 yards last season, so it’s hard to imagine him having much of an impact with the Chargers this time around.
But nevertheless, teammates and the organization still seem thrilled to have him back.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked about the reunion at the NFL’s annual league meetings and said, “The rapport that those two have bodes well for us.”
Although Williams hasn’t been very productive over the last couple of seasons, when he was with star quarterback Justin Herbert, he was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode for a big play.
Williams pulled in nearly 2, 500 yards in three seasons with Herbert before tearing his ACL in his final year with the team.
After a devastating knee injury and father time sneaking up on him, it will be extremely difficult for the No. 7 pick in 2017 to recapture his glory days.
But if him and Herbert’s connection has withstood the test of time, then he could be discretely become a difference maker for the bolts.
