Jimmie Ward checked for injury after huge hit on Patrick Mahomes
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Jimmie Ward delivered a big hit in the first quarter of Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, and the San Francisco 49ers defensive back paid the price.

Patrick Mahomes ran for a big gain on 3rd-and-11 deep inside San Francisco territory, but Ward forced the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback to fumble with an open-field hit. However, it was Ward who stayed down on the turf and needed to be helped to the sideline.

Mahomes fumbled the ball backwards, so the hit actually prevented him from picking up a first down. However, the Chiefs converted on fourth down and scored a touchdown a few plays later. Mahomes stood over Ward and taunted him following the play.

Ward returned to the field on the same drive.
