Although Trey Lance will likely replace Jimmy Garoppolo at some point in the near future, the veteran quarterback welcomed the North Dakota St. product to the San Francisco 49ers with open arms on Thursday night.
Niners general manager John Lynch said Garoppolo was the first to text Lance after he was selected with the No. 3 pick.
"One thing that was really heartwarming to me, I heard last night that Jimmy reached out [to Lance]," Lynch said Friday night, per ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "Trey was here today, and Trey told us that the first text he got was from Jimmy Garoppolo. So that's pretty special. I think it speaks to his class."
Garoppolo was expecting the team to select a quarterback with the third pick after Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan decided to move up in the draft from No. 12. The Niners brass also informed him of its plans, Shanahan said.
The 49ers have made it clear that Garoppolo will remain in the mix until Lance is ready to take over. Shanahan said earlier this week it would be hard for Lance to win the starting job in a competition with Garoppolo. However, the franchise wouldn't have traded up for the young QB if it didn't think he would eventually beat out Garoppolo.
If Lance doesn't win this job this season, he almost certainly will heading into the 2022 campaign.
