The Minnesota Vikings selected J.J. McCarthy with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, fresh off a national championship at Michigan.
However, during a quarterback battle with Sam Darnold, McCarthy suffered a season-ending meniscus tear in his right knee, requiring surgery and forcing him to miss his entire rookie season while Darnold led the team to the playoffs.
Now, entering what is technically his second season—and with Darnold now in Seattle with the Seahawks—McCarthy has been handed the keys to the offense.
Following a stellar performance in a joint practice with the New England Patriots on Thursday, he made it abundantly clear where he believes he stands among NFL quarterbacks.
McCarthy didn’t mince words—he believes he’s among the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL.
"I think I'm one of the most accurate guys out there," McCarthy said. "And just being able to take it day by day... It's not just, ‘Was the ball completed?’ It’s, ‘Did I give the runner the ball in stride? Did I put it on the right pad so he could turn a certain way?’ Being able to lean into that as one of my strengths is something I have to be extremely hard on with every single throw."

During the Vikings’ joint practice on Thursday ahead of their preseason game this weekend against the Patriots, McCarthy completed 15 of his 19 pass attempts for four touchdowns, no interceptions, took two sacks, and scrambled twice.
It was easily his best practice of training camp so far, but it won’t change his status for Saturday. Head coach Kevin O’Connell revealed that McCarthy is not expected to suit up for the game, with backup Sam Howell getting the start instead.
