JJ Watt Says Bolts New Coach From Michigan Is "Game Changer"
USA TODAY Sports

Since the Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh, one of Harbaugh's moves has attracted a lot of attention and praise -- the hiring of his Michigan strength coach Ben Herbert.

The hiring of a strength coach wouldn't normally attract this much attention, but numerous people who know Herbert or have worked with him have shared how crucial Herbert was to Michigan's success and recent national championship win.

Former NFL All-Pro J.J. Watt, who was coached by Herbert in college at Wisconsin, added to the dialogue of how important a hire Herbert was to the Chargers.

"One of the underrated things about that move that I think is going to play a big role that people might never even hear about or know about but will play a massive role if they are going to be successful in Los Angeles and that is the hiring of Ben Herbert as their strength coach," Watt said on the Pat McAfee Show. "He was my strength coach at Wisconsin and he's truly a game changer."

"He has been massive in Michigan's success for these last years," Watt said. "If the Los Angeles Chargers are gonna be successful, Ben Herbert and his mentality and his helping to cultivate that culture is going to be a big part of it."

Watt also pointed out how Herbert's Michigan team was incredibly healthy, which could prove instrumental to the Chargers. The Chargers have been one of the most injured teams as of late, with back-breaking injuries during the 2023 season to key players like Justin Herbert, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler, Joey Bosa and more.

If Ben Herbert can not only build the Chargers culture, but also keep his players healthy, the Chargers truly will have a much better shot at contending.
