J.J. Watt and other former and current NFL players have plenty of empathy for what Trey Hendrickson is going through right now.
Hendrickson remains frustrated with the Cincinnati Bengals due to a lack of communication regarding his contract extension. The All-Pro defensive end released a statement claiming the club has not engaged in contract talks with him since the 2025 NFL Draft.
Watt, a former three-time Defensive Player of the Year who retired after the 2022 season, offered his take on the situation and speculated Cincinnati told Hendrickson last year he would be paid accordingly this offseason.
I assume it went something like this:
— JJ Watt (@JJWatt) May 12, 2025
Last offseason: “We can’t/don’t want to do a deal now, but we’ll make you right next offseason and get it done early.”
Player has great season…
This offseason: Lowball offer and/or crickets.
Pay a fair price early or pay top dollar…
Watt believes the Bengals are not honoring their side of the bargain, or have simply fallen short with their offer to him.
Former three-time All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who also retired in 2022, wholeheartedly agreed with Watt's assessment and even offered his own experience on the matter. Suh recounted how the Detroit Lions expected him to take less money after his 2014 season in which he earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl status.
Yes I 100% agree this is how teams do it and this is exactly how Detroit did me and why I was forced to leave because when it came to them paying me off of an elite 2014 campaign they expected a home town discount..

But they forgot they already got that from me in 2010 when I…
Watt's comments also resonated with current NFL pass rushers. Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy alluded to Hendrickson's situation deriving from him being 30 years old and claims age is not a valid "excuse" to deprive him the money he's after.
JJ the next excuse these teams can no longer use is AGE!!! Numbers are Numbers!! Trey deserves his cash money and will continue to ball except for 2 games this season!

Van Noy obviously plays for one of the Bengals' AFC North rivals, so for him to defend Hendrickson is notable. Cam Jordan and the New Orleans Saints don't face Cincinnati very often, but Jordan used to play with Hendrickson from 2017-20 for New Orleans. Jordan also made his stance on his former teammate's situation crystal clear.
Pay him for services rendered!!! They could’ve took care of him last yr! And he went DPOY worthy

Hendrickson released his statement for this exact reaction. Exposing his business with the Bengals to the public was always going to resort in support for him because players like Suh have been through similar troubles.
Whether or not it helps him get the team to cooperate remains to be seen, but at the very least, plenty around the league have Hendrickson's back.
