Sometimes, the best thing to say in a tough situation is nothing at all. While that may or may not be the right approach with Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson, it’s the one quarterback Joe Burrow is opting to take.
McPherson missed two field goals during the Bengals' Sunday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and both came at the most inopportune moments. This marked the second time in McPherson's NFL career that he's missed two field goals in a game, with the first coming during his rookie season.
After trailing 24-6 at halftime, the Bengals rallied behind Burrow's stellar play and tied the game at 27 early in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati's defense didn't allow a single first down on the next three Chargers possessions, but this was when McPherson's two misses came.
The 25-year-old failed to connect on two potential go-ahead field goals in the final quarter. The first was a 48-yard attempt with 7:35 remaining, followed by a 51-yarder that McPherson pushed wide left with 1:52 left on the clock.
The Chargers finally broke through after two big throws from quarterback Justin Herbert, with J.K. Dobbins scoring on a 29-yard run with 27 seconds remaining to take a 34-27 lead.
Following the loss, reporters asked Burrow what you say to McPherson after the two missed field goals. The 27-year-old simply shook his head and quietly said, "Nothing." His expression and overall disappointment in the moment are easy to see in the clip below.

The loss moved the Bengals to 4-7 on the season and was a major setback for their playoff hopes in an AFC North with two talented teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.
Burrow finished the night with 356 passing yards and three touchdowns, while the duo of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins each had strong performances. Higgins led the way with nine catches for 148 yards and one touchdown, and Chase caught seven passes for 75 yards and two scores.
