Joe Flacco's honest admission about first playing with Bengals makes his instant success even better

Joe Flacco has understood his assignment after two starts with the Cincinnati Bengals. As the quarterback, getting the ball to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins is where success can be found. He experienced plenty of it last Thursday night in a 33-31 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A week earlier, as Flacco was working to get to that level with his new star wide receivers, he admitted to Andrew Whitworth and Ryan Fitzpatrick there were definite nerves involved.

"I know I'm 40 years old, but the first couple times I threw to Ja'Marr [Chase] and Tee [Higgins], I was a little bit nervous," Flacco said on Fitz & Whit. "I'm like, 'Man, I want them to know. Like, I can put some nice touch on it. I could put it where you want it.' I overthought it for sure."

Joe Flacco quickly learns his lesson

Flacco's resume speaks for itself. He's lasted nearly 20 years in the NFL and has won 17 more games than he's lost as a starter. The former Super Bowl MVP is 14th all-time in passing yards.

But is he the star of Cincinnati's offense at 40 years old? Absolutely not. That title belongs to Chase, the reigning triple crown winner who is incredulously in a good spot to potentially repeat that feat.

Flacco revealed he was a bit insecure with his accuracy when throwing to Chase for the first time

"Like, one of the first balls I threw to Ja'Marr," Flacco explained. "He was running one of these little skinny posts we have, and he was a little bit deeper than I thought he was going to be, and I missed him. And I was just like, 'Oh man, he thinks I suck.' With those guys, especially, just put it somewhere around them, and they'll make you look good."

Perfection isn't required when you've got two of the best receivers at your disposal. Yes, Joe Burrow is surgical when he's on his game, but Flacco doesn't need to be exactly who the franchise QB is.

Flacco has enhanced his accuracy by getting the ball out on time, and hitting windows when Chase and Higgins just entered them. Flacco's average time to throw of 2.36 seconds over the last two weeks is the quickest in the NFL, and only Aaron Rodgers has gotten rid of the ball under 2.5 seconds at a higher rate according to Pro Football Focus.

He figured it out, and by doing it so quickly, it makes what he's done in two weeks even more impressive.

Flacco has already out-dueled Rodgers, and he'll need to have the same success against many other QBs in the coming weeks if the Bengals are going to stay competitive entering the back-half of the season. Any and all nerves about being good enough for Chase and Higgins are out the window, or at least should be.
