Joe Milton credits Dak Prescott for help, calls out New England Patriots

The Dallas Cowboys have a new youngster inside the quarterback room. Joe Milton was traded for during the offseason and has a chance to back up Dak Prescott. At times, tension between a veteran and second-year guy can be there. But according to Milton, that is not the case.

Milton spoke on how good a leader Prescott has been early in Cowboys training camp on Thursday. Turns out, the franchise QB is going out of his way to help Milton in certain situations. A positive for fans in Dallas to hear ahead of the season.

“Dak is a great leader,” Milton said via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “… All respect to him. He literally goes out of his way to help me.”

Milton only has one game under his belt, spending his rookie season with the New England Patriots. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown in a Week 18 win against the Buffalo Bills. Fellow rookie Drake Maye had been shut down, giving the Milton an opportunity to shine.

The Cowboys liked what they saw and decided to pull the trigger on a trade. Cooper Rush was on his way out of Dallas, the long-time backup. Milton was somebody who could come in, learn under Prescott, and potentially get a fresh start. Maybe something he needed after a weird situation in New England.

“I’ve been in another building. I know how that goes,” Milton said of being a young quarterback. “It’s just very different over here.”

The Patriots started the 2025 season with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback. Not wanting to throw Maye into the fire right away, Brissett was honest about wanting to be the guy out there. Eventually, Maye did step into the spotlight and now appears to have a bright future.

Based on his comments, Milton appears happy to be in a new spot already. Prescott should provide to learn from someone who is entering his 10th season in the NFL.

Barring another major injury to Prescott, Milton is unlikely to take any competitive snaps for the Cowboys in 2025. The Cowboys certainly hope a scenario arises where things have gone well enough for Milton to start a game in Week 18.

For now, training camp is a chance to learn from one of the best. Milton is already appreciative of it too, shouting out Prescott after just two days.
