The 2025 college football season began with a significant upset that surprised one of the top programs' fan bases. The No. 14 Alabama Crimson Tide, which was preseason ranked in the top 10, lost to the No. 7 Florida State Seminoles. Florida State started the year unranked after finishing last season with a record of 2-10.
Florida State defeated Alabama 31-17 in Week 1. This loss brought head coach Kalen DeBoer's record to 6-5 in his last 11 games. It also marked DeBoer's fourth loss to an unranked opponent, even though he has only been at Alabama for 14 games.
The Crimson Tide have won consecutive games impressively. However, on "The Joel Klatt Show," the Fox Sports analyst indicated that Alabama has no margin for error due to that early-season loss.
"Here's the scary part for Alabama, though," Klatt said. "For all of the positive sentiment that you could potentially garner from coming out and answering the critics and playing well and controlling your own effort level, they still have zero margin for error now. That Week 1 just put them totally behind the eight ball. Zero margin for error, both in their play on the field and in the sentiment surrounding the program."

Klatt believes that they will no longer receive any benefit of the doubt from the fan base for the remainder of the season. He feels that the fans are unsettled about how things have unfolded under DeBoer and that pressure will persist throughout the season.
Klatt believes that if Alabama has another lackluster performance or shows little effort, the fan base will quickly become frustrated and consider moving on from him. He highlighted the team's effort as a concern after the Week 1 game against Florida State.
“If I am Alabama, I am panicked,” Klatt previously said. “I’m not worried about Texas. I’m not worried about Clemson. I’m not worried about Notre Dame. All three of those teams lost. I am dumbfounded and panicked about Alabama. Florida State beat them badly in the effort game.”
In that game, Dan Orlovsky from ESPN tweeted that he observed over 20 instances where they weren’t giving much effort. That effort improved the last two weeks as Alabama dominated the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the Wisconsin Badgers.
Alabama may have steadied itself with dominant wins over Louisiana-Monroe and Wisconsin, but the scars of Week 1 haven’t fully healed. Klatt’s warning underscores the reality in Tuscaloosa: the standard is still the standard regardless of whether Nick Saban is still the coach.
With DeBoer’s recent track record and a restless fan base, every game feels like a referendum on the program’s future. If the Crimson Tide sustains their renewed energy and effort, 2025 could still turn into something special, but one more setback could erase any optimism in a hurry.
