In college football, uniforms are more than just clothing; they’re part of a team’s identity. Some programs maintain a traditional approach, sticking with designs that have remained largely unchanged for decades.

Others, like Oregon, roll out bold alternate uniforms that spark conversation every season. But not everyone is a fan of those modern looks. Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt shared his thoughts on the best uniforms in the sport and explained why he strongly prefers the classics.

Joel Klatt Explains Why He Hates Alternate Uniforms

In his mind, there’s one program that stands above the rest when it comes to looking the part every Saturday.

"I'm a classic guy," Klatt said. "Here's my stipulation: I need to know exactly who's playing right when I flip the television on. So, it can't be something like, 'Hey, these are our alternate uniforms.' I hate alternate uniforms... So, give me things like Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Penn State, but the best one, you flip it on and know right away, it's the golden domes. Notre Dame has the best unis. They're the best dressed."

Why Notre Dame’s Look Stands Out From the Rest

According to Klatt, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have the best uniforms in college football. Their iconic navy blue home jersey, paired with gold pants and a gold helmet, stands out, as do their white road jerseys, which also feature gold pants and a gold helmet. Whenever someone turns on the television, they can instantly recognize if Notre Dame is playing in that game.

The Fighting Irish typically stick to their traditional look, but when they do change it up, they often opt for the "Shamrock" green alternates. These green jerseys trace back to the 1920s under head coach Knute Rockne, who introduced them to help distinguish Notre Dame from its opponents on the field. Over the years, these jerseys have primarily been worn for significant games.

While the Fighting Irish have occasionally mixed in their famous green jerseys for big moments, their trademark navy and gold remain the most recognizable look in the sport. That consistency is part of what Klatt admires most, and it explains why fans immediately know they’re watching Notre Dame the moment they flip on a game.

From the golden domes on the helmets to the “Play Like a Champion” sign in the tunnel, the uniforms are more than just aesthetics; they’re a symbol of one of college football’s most storied traditions.
