It seems that Denver Broncos second-year quarterback Drew Lock is, well, a lock. The 23-year-old will take the reins of the Broncos offense in 2020, and general manager John Elway is committed to building around him in the coming years.
“We’ve decided that we’re going to build around Drew and give him that opportunity to take the job,” Elway said in his pre-draft press conference via Zoom, according to DNVR's Zac Stevens. “We feel that he’s that guy.”
Just because Elway believes Lock is the guy moving forward doesn't mean they won't continue to assess his improvement throughout the duration of his career.
“By no means has Drew made it,” Elway stated. “We believe he’s got the potential to do it. We think he’s just going to continue to get better and better. He’s still in the learning process and knows that he’s going to have to get better.”
Lock went 4-1 last season at the helm of the Broncos offense with a 64.1 completion percentage, 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He actually had an impressive rookie season through five games, so it's not surprising that Elway and the Broncos' brass has the utmost confidence in him.
Since Peyton Manning retired, Denver hasn't found much success. However, their young players are beginning to shine and things are looking up after a strong rebuilding period.
With Melvin Gordon, Phillip Lindsay, Noah Fant, Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton in the mix, Denver is primed to have a much better season.
