The Detroit Lions absolutely needed a win on Monday Night Football. With an NFC North as close as it is, and the 5-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers hungry for a statement road win, a loss heading into the bye week would have been devastating.
The defense and running back Jahmyr Gibbs came up big in the Lions' 24-9 win. Even despite the win, there's still the lingering anxiety that the margin of victory could've been bigger. That the offense is struggling. That may sound absurd, given that the Lions have scored the third-most points in the NFL and are second in point differential.
Something does still feel off. They lack explosiveness. According to FanSided's Marcus Mosher on X, the Lions are in the middle of the pack in big plays per game (5.9). This is tied with the Carolina Panthers. Big plays in this context are rushes of ten or more yards and passing plays of 20 or more yards.

Looking at Mosher's table, eyes will immediately be drawn to the top of the list: the Chicago Bears. The Bears, now led by former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, lead the way with a staggering 8.0 big plays per game. Much of that comes from their remodeled rushing attack led by former Lions RB D'Andre Swift. Even so, they have 21 big plays out of the pass game despite questions surrounding quarterback Caleb Williams. That is only two such plays fewer than the Lions in one fewer game.
One major culprit for the Lions' lack of explosiveness is QB Jared Goff. For all intents and purposes, Goff is still having a fantastic season. He's tied for the league lead in passer rating and, prior to his rough performance against the Buccaneers, led the league in completion percentage and touchdown passes. He's deservedly in the discussions for MVP, and still has a chance to win the award when all is said and done.
Yet, Goff's passing yards rate is well below what fans have grown accustomed to. Goff currently averages 233 passing yards per game, totaling 1,631 passing yards on the season. His passing yards totals are good for ninth in the league, but it's worth noting that some QBs have had their bye week, while Goff is about to enter his. So far this season, Goff has only one game where he's thrown for more than 300 yards. Goff's lack of yardage has resulted in numerous missed opportunities, and he'd be the first to tell you that.
If Goff's 233 yards per game hold, it would be the second-lowest in Goff's career, where he was considered the primary starter. His current lowest is 231.8 in his very first season with the Lions in 2021. That was notably the last season where Goff did not have Johnson as the primary play-caller for the full season. It's a noteworthy drop off as Goff finished second in passing yards each of the past two seasons, and has led all of football in the category across the past few seasons.
Goff's underwhelming yardage could have a variety of culprits, such as Morton's play-calling or the remade offensive line still trying to gel. Goff's numbers outside of yardage are proof that the Goff of recent years is still there. However, concerns still remain. Goff has struggled to get the ball to wide receiver Jameson Williams, and he's 14 for 23 when passing on third or fourth down with three or fewer yards needed. Goff only had 13 incompletions in similar situations all of last season.
Morton has his work cut out for him during the bye week. The offense is still an envy of the league, but it's obvious it hasn't been operating to its fullest potential. If Monday's defensive performance isn't a mirage, then a recalibrated offense could be the missing piece for a Super Bowl run. Between these concerns and numerous injuries, the bye week could not have come at a better time. Hopefully, the Lions exit the bye week refreshed and ready to put up big numbers on Brian Flores' tough Minnesota Vikings defense.
