John Wolford To Play First Half, Bryce Perkins Second Half Against Texans

After a win in their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Los Angeles Rams prepare for a Friday meeting against the Houston Texans.

The Rams have a few injuries they are monitoring, and starters and key rotation guys will remain out in order to manage reps. However, there will still be plenty of young players Los Angeles could use a longer look at as they pare down the roster to 53.

At quarterback, the Rams opted to let Bryce Perkins play the entire game against the Chargers but head coach Sean McVay announced that would change against the Texans, via Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic:

I asked Sean McVay about backup QBs plan through this preseason game, and he said John Wolford will play first half of Friday’s game. This is a different approach than last year when Bryce Perkins closed it out solo, & McVay indicates they’d like to get Wolford some live work.

John Wolford has been a solid backup during his time in Los Angeles but lacks in-game experience. His most notable outings came in 2020 when he started in a win against the Arizona Cardinals and played a quarter against the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs. Last season, Wolford appeared in three games where he attempted four passes total and completed one of them for five yards.

The 26-year-old has reportedly been having a solid camp, so this is a good opportunity to see what he can do in live reps. As for Perkins, he showed great command and playmaking ability last week and he’ll look to build off that in the second half.

Depending how it goes against the Texans, McVay could opt for the same setup the following week against the Cincinnati Bengals. But for now, it’ll be fun to see Wolford in live action.
