Jon Gruden shares his reaction to Derek Carr retiring

Jon Gruden gave his former quarterback Derek Carr a warm sendoff this weekend.

Carr on Saturday announced the surprising news that he was retiring from football. The longtime NFL quarterback is dealing with a labral tear and degenerative issues with his rotator cuff, which led to his decision.

Carr spent the first 9 of his 11 NFL seasons with the Raiders’ franchise. He was with the New Orleans Saints the last two seasons. Gruden coached the Raiders from 2018-2021 and worked closely with Carr during that time. He had some warm words for his former quarterback.

“Congratulations on a great career. You showcased incredible mental toughness and preparation for over a decade. I love you and enjoyed our time. Keep shredding!” Gruden wrote to Carr via X.

That’s a nice compliment from Gruden, and it certainly means a lot. There were reports during Carr’s time with the Raiders suggesting that he and Gruden clashed. In the end, it’s clear that Gruden respected Carr, who led the Raiders to two playoff appearances.

Carr passed for 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions in his career. It’s pretty clear that the Saints did not have plans for Carr to be involved with the team in 2025. Maybe he can join Gruden in Chucky’s new venture.
