With the Green Bay Packers coming off the 2026 NFL Draft, the team now prepares for the upcoming season that sees a different coach command the defense after Jeff Hafley became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. As the Packers now have Jonathan Gannon as the defensive coordinator, he spoke about why Green Bay stood out to him.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the former Arizona Cardinals head coach was asked what was appealing about the Green Bay opportunity, with him mentioning the “stability” of the franchise.

“The organization, being in the NFL for however many years, you just see the stability of this place and that kind of catches your eye in a league that’s so much turnover,” Gannon said, via Kelly Hallinan. “It’s obviously an iconic franchise, the Green Bay Packers, when you’re a little kid, you learn about the Green Bay Packers, no matter where you are in the country. And then obviously, Matt, I really haven’t known him for a little bit of time, competed against him for a decent amount of time. It was really cool, I got the opportunity to come link up with him.”

Packers’ Jonathan Gannon on his defensive philosophy

Another aspect that the Packers’ new defensive coordinator, Gannon, talked about was his defensive philosophy, which includes a major point of adaptability. He would say he doesn’t get “caught up in 4-3, 3-4,” but wants to be an NFL-style defense.

“I just believe that you’ve got to continually every year try to adapt and solve problems and, really, with your guys in mind, Gannon said, via the team’s YouTube page. “There are some principles, there are some things I like to do, but it’s only if our players can do it. I told them the other day, if we’re not good at this, just because I like to do it, we’re not going to do it. That’s our job. We’ve got to put them in the best positions possible that they feel comfortable that they can go out and play the game.”

Gannon looks to implement his defense in Green Bay this offseason.
