Jordan Love proving himself as Packers franchise QB

Following a stretch of mediocre play, Packers QB Jordan Love has bounced back and solidified himself as Green Bay's signal-caller.

After sitting behind future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers for three seasons, Love — an unpopular draft choice — finally got his chance to be a full-time starting QB in 2023.

Love started the season strongly, throwing for seven touchdowns and one interception through three games. But following a solid start, the 25-year-old struggled, throwing seven touchdowns and nine interceptions over his next six games.

The tough six-game run created far more questions than answers for the Packers. Was Love to blame or did it have more to do with a young offensive supporting cast?

During these struggles, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst was unsure about Love's future in Green Bay, saying the QB was "a little up and down." Gutekunst also noted it was "hard to evaluate anybody" because the entire team was struggling.

Instead of faltering under the pressure of his poor play, Love bounced back and put together a great five-game stretch to get the Packers (6-8) back into NFC playoff contention.

Over those five games, which included a three-game winning streak, Love threw for 11 touchdowns and one interception.

Following the winning streak, the Packers dropped two in a row to the Giants (5-9) and Buccaneers (7-7).

In a 34-20 loss to the Buccaneers in Week 15, Love played superbly (284 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 74.4 completion percentage). The Packers lost, however, because their defense could not slow Baker Mayfield (381 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, 78.6 completion percentage), who finished the game with a perfect passer rating (158.3).

Despite his recent strong play, Love has several areas to work on. His completion percentage (62.6) is below the league average (64.4) and the QB's footwork is problematic — the latter an issue Love has acknowledged as a problem.

Love will continue to grow, as will his young wide receivers — 24-year-old Christian Watson (422 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns) and 23-year-old Jayden Reed (592 receiving yards, six receiving touchdowns).

The Packers playoff chances may be slipping away, but they have a favorable schedule to close the season — at Panthers (2-12), at Vikings (7-7) and vs. Bears (5-9). If Green Bay goes 3-0, a playoff berth is possible.

Even if the team fails to qualify for the playoffs, the season can be considered a success because the Packers have answered their questions about whether Love can be a franchise QB.

It's a resounding "yes."
