As a first-round pick, it's natural that wide receiver Matthew Golden will generate more excitement and expectation for the Green Bay Packers and its fans. It's a new era of football, and these days receivers tend to reach the NFL level much more polished and ready to contribute in some regards.
Quarterback Jordan Love has seen those traits in Golden. After the first practice of mandatory minicamp, the passer talked about his early connection with the rookie, and mentioned the three things that have stood out about the offensive weapon.
"He’s been looking good," Love said. "I think from the get go, from Day 1 when he got here, he’s showcased just the versatility he has running routes, the speed he has, and his ability to catch."
Moving forward, it's a matter of how quickly Matthew Golden can be fully integrated within the offensive structure. Coming from Texas, the rookie has some schematic crossover, but any transition from college to the NFL will have a naturally steep learning curve.
"I think for him, every day he’s been getting better just understanding what he needs to do," Love added. "You could tell the first couple days there might be a couple routes here and there where he just might be thinking a little bit too much out there, and not just going out there and playing fast, which is expected for someone who just got here and is learning the whole offense."
With how deep the Packers' wide receiver group is, some type of rotation will inevitably happen. In OTAs, though, Golden was put in some positions with the ones opposite Romeo Doubs, even when the offense was in 12 personnel. If he takes full control of his role and knows what to do at a reasonable level from the jump, it's not absurd to think that he will have a major role as a rookie.
"The more he can stay locked in with all that, I think he’s definitely going to be a playmaker for us," Love stated. "Excited to see how far he can go.”
For the Packers, how far Matthew Golden can go is a big part of how high the offensive ceiling can be for the next few years.
