Jordan Love spills the beans on what's next for the Packers' offense after Matthew Golden's breakout game

Eleven, zero, 52, 58. It wasn't necessarily a stellar first month in the NFL for rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden. But that's just what happens with the Green Bay Packers, their style of passing offense, and rookies in general. On Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, Golden's fifth NFL game, a breakout of sorts happened in the best way possible.

The first-rounder had three catches for 86 yards, plus two carries for 16 yards, Golden's first 100-scrimmage yard game in the league. For quarterback Jordan Love, that was just an example of what's about to come, and what Golden can do for this offense.

"He adds another explosive playmaker. I think he made some big-time plays today," Love said. "Both really explosive plays with the go ball down the sideline and that last play to him. I think he's a guy we're going to keep trying to get going and keep finding ways to get him the ball, because he's done some really good things. It's always about trying to spread it around, but he's definitely a very explosive playmaker, and we just have to keep finding ways to get to him."

On a key fourth-quarter third down, Love was able to find Golden down the field. A key play before the game-sealing field goal.

"We had a concept call, a deep concept, and I felt the pocket kind of moving and a lane to get out, so I started moving left," Love explained. "MG was taking it deep and saw me working the scramble, so he was able to put his foot in the ground and come back down. I just threw it up for him, and he made a great play."

Offensive explosion

It wasn't a perfect game for the offense by any means, but the unit has had a great season outside of that Week 3 underwhelming performance against the Cleveland Browns. Now, the question is how far this group can go.

With Golden breaking out and Christian Watson close to his return to the field from a knee injury, Love's life will become easier.

"There's definitely still room to make even bigger plays," Love stressed. "We've done a good job of hitting some of them, but you add Christian Watson back into the mix, and I think we can do some real damage. We're always trying to find ways to create those explosive plays, push the ball down the field, and put that pressure on the defense. But you add another speed guy like Christian, and we're going to open this thing up. I still think there are more plays we can hit on."

Earlier this week, the Packers opened up a 21-day practice window for Watson. The team did not activate him for this Bengals game, but there's a possibility for Watson to return before the three-week deadline. Maybe it's next week, against the Arizona Cardinals. Either way, Jordan Love knows there's room for improvement — and rookie Matthew Golden has taken the steps to make it a reality.
