There's no denying the greatness that Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson have in them. The NFL knows this all too well.
ESPN NFL writer Jeremy Fowler is back with another position rankings decided by the coaches, executives, and scouts of the NFL. This time, the focus was on offensive tackles. It didn't take long to see Johnson and Mailata in the rankings.
Johnson was up first as he was ranked third among tackles. Even at age 35, Johnson has shown to still dominate on the field.
"There has been no tangible drop-off in Johnson's play after 12 seasons. In fact, Johnson ranked among the best -- again -- in run block win rate at 80.2.
'He's kind of the gold standard now -- technique, smarts and probably the most instinctive of them all,' an NFL personnel director said. 'He's a perfect product of that system. He's dealt with a lot, from mental health to injuries, and he's come out of it better than ever.'
Just about everyone lauds Johnson's overall game, from his second-level mauling in the run game to his footwork and discipline in the pass game."
Up next is Mailata, who just barely cracked the top five at number five. People around the league love his 6-foot-8, 365-pound stature while showing off his quickness on the line.
"Mailata allowed 1.5 sacks in 2024 per Next Gen Stats, tied for the fewest among tackles with at least 350 pass-blocking snaps. Couple that with his running game prowess and the Eagles have a long-term solution at left tackle.
One NFC exec called Mailata's ascension 'astronomical.'
'One of the most unique players in the NFL,' a veteran NFL personnel executive said. 'Has really improved year-to-year. Only thing that holds him back from the others at the top is they probably have better instincts.'
A different personnel executive man with an NFC team loves Mailata's game, but kept him out of the top four because he's 'still improving and becoming more sound, but there's still enough ways to get him off balance.'"
Mailata and Johnson are just another example of what has made Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland so great at his job. These were guys Stoutland developed with Johnson living up to his fourth overall expectations, and Mailata exceeding them as a former seventh-round pick.
Johnson has already built a Hall of Fame career with six Pro Bowls, five All-Pro selections, and two Super Bowls. Mailata is finally getting the respect he deserves after making the second-team All-Pro team last year and receiving votes for Offensive Player of the Year.
Pro Football Focus has also loved Mailata and Johnson in their offensive rankings, as they also made their top five. They had Mailata number one and Johnson number five on their rankings.
The NFL's new Protector of the Year award also could have Johnson and Mailata in the conversation to win it. They both have the top six best odds to win the award in 2025.
Everyone in the NFL knows how great Mailata and Johnson is, but Eagles could have easily told them this years ago. These two will continue to be at the top of their games going into the new season.
